Interested in my forchette thumb but don’t have access to Principles of Knitting? I found a reference to the thumb in Mary Thomas’s Knitting Book. See what you can find when you look.
Don’t have Mary Thomas’s book? It’s easily purchased from Amazon or a big box book store. It was originally published in 1938 and the Dover reprint is an unabridged republication. Despite its age and brevity (and a disturbing reference to “coloured knitting” on page 113), it is shockingly comprehensive. Not the perfect substitute for Principles of Knitting, but definitely a port in the storm.
I’ve moved on from the mitts for now to focus on a new design. As you can see, the first attempt (at the top of the photo) was . . . shall we say . . . unsuccessful.

Well, Cheryl has shamed me into posting. But, seriously, this is my second post this month so I’m picking up steam.
The dog days of summer have been consumed with knitting things that I subsequently fail to photograph. I’ve recently completed a Mohair Bias Loop, a Linen Stitch Scarf, a lovely silk and mohair Annabella’s Cowl, and a Schieffelin Point Shawl. Well, make that two Schieffelin Point Shawls since I had to frog the first and reknit it. Yet, I have no photographic evidence that any of these projects actually exist. Some day.
I also designed a cowl pattern for Judy at Ball & Skein. I just love the way she dyes yarn, especially . . . mmmmmm . . . 100% cashmere yarn. Lovely stuff.
I’m really pleased with the finished cowl, but stumped when it comes to a name. Any suggestions?
KOIA (who, BTW, hasn’t blogged since the summer of 2009), added a post to my Facebook wall last week asking why I haven’t updated the blog in a while. Well, I have a nice bullet list, complete with photos, to explain why.
• I was in Denver for a week for work.
See, I have the shopping bags to prove it.
• I turned around and went to California for 5 crazy days of Disneyland and cheer competition.
• While I was in California, I made the 54-mile, 5-hour round trip to LA from Anaheim to visit my son who attends college in LA. As an added bonus, I got a free golf lesson.
• I made three shop samples for the LYS where I teach classes.
• I wrote up the pattern for the sock-weight version of Fog Lifter and knit another sample. So the Bambino sample joins her ShibuiKnits sister. Watch for the pattern next week.
• I’ve been diligently (not) working on writing up the pattern for another scarf that I first knit last summer! Yikes. It made a brief appearance at Sock Summit and hasn’t been heard from since. I think it’s time to revive it. What do you think?
• And I’m working on a super secret project that I can only show you a peek of.
If I tell you more, I’ll have to kill you.
