Photo Finish

Two weeks ago, I got swept up in the excitement of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies and impulsively started a new sweater, thinking it would be a perfect Knitting Olympics project.

I envisioned myself proudly wearing my new cardigan while I watched the Closing Ceremonies.

Wrong.

This seemingly straightforward project has kicked my arse.   If I had a nickle for every time I reknit the sleeve cap . . . well, you know what I mean.

Now here I am, one day before the end of the Olympics and I’m just blocking the pieces:

Will it be done by tomorrow?  No.  Well, I guess that depends on how I choose to define “done.”  I think I’ll be able to get all the pieces sewn.  And I might also be able to knit the neckband.  But, it will surely be button-less since I have no appropriate buttons and no time to buy any.

So, what do you think?  Do I make it onto the podium with a button-less cardigan?

    Yes, for sure!

  2. Michelle on 27 Feb 2010 at 11:53 am

Yep, you can wear it right?:)

Well, technically, the KNITTING will be done. I think you can cross the finish line. These things are a personal challenge, though, so only your opinion matters. Your project was a big one, and a definite challenge to complete within the time-frame. And the knittins IS done….

    I vote yes.

  5. Laurie on 27 Feb 2010 at 2:10 pm

Technically, the knitting is done, so I agree with Nancy – hop up on that podium and cheer!!!

If the answer is “no,” then my button-less cardigan is disqualified as well…so I vote yes!

  7. margene on 27 Feb 2010 at 4:11 pm

No reason to disqualify you as far as I can tell!

Done in my opinion. I’m sure even gold medal Olympians think of things they could have done differently or better… but they still got the gold. Congrats on such a beautiful FO. BTW – I’m oohing and aahing over your blocking picture. Who knew blocking could be so beautiful?

I agree with Jennifer. Beautiful blocking. Where did you get such a wonderful blocking board?

  10. mary lou on 27 Feb 2010 at 5:40 pm

Heck, i’d call it done even without the sewing.

  11. Bobbi on 27 Feb 2010 at 6:48 pm

    Nice…nearly finished!!!

  12. Diane on 27 Feb 2010 at 7:07 pm

Yes, please, inquiring minds want to know more about your blocking board.

I vote yes! I agree with Bonney… if you can wear it, it counts as done! I love the color and bet you will get a lot of wear out of this, once you find those perfect buttons.

Of course it will be finished without buttons…
you need to choose between gold, silver or bronze & it would be presumptious to choose before the race is over !

I think absolutely. Buttons are not an integral part of a cardigan–the knitting part is what matters.

  16. Joy on 27 Feb 2010 at 9:46 pm

Why not? I think it counts since the *knitting* is done ;o)

  17. Carole on 27 Feb 2010 at 10:15 pm

Works for me. What a great color!

  18. Salihan on 27 Feb 2010 at 11:16 pm

I agree with everyone else. I think it’s done!

According to the “Official Rules” if you are comfortable with calling it done, then it is done. I failed at my project miserably, but I would say yours is definitely done!

I’d say YES too! I resurrected a lace shawl that has sat since June, and though I’ve made progress, it’s still a couple weeks to being finished. I am very impressed with your blocking method there… the board, the wires, the pins. Beautiful finishing!

  21. Judy on 28 Feb 2010 at 7:14 am

Sure, why not. Close it with a pin and call it a wrap.

  22. Manise on 28 Feb 2010 at 4:58 pm

Yes you do. Buttons are ornaments and besides the knitting is basically done. Use a shawl pin to close the top for today!

  23. thea on 28 Feb 2010 at 6:41 pm

yes you do – the button decision should never be rushed…

Sorry you had such troubles with the sleeve caps, but I do love the red and hope you get to wear it lots!
