Spilling Some Ink
My frantically paced sweater knitting has taken a back seat to a couple of scarf projects.
First, thanks for all the nice comments about my Fountain Pen Shawl in the Spring issue of Interweave Knits. It was quite the shock when Eunny called me last August to tell me she was publishing it. My cell phone rang while I was in Las Vegas, a stopping point on the road to LA where my son goes to college. And there was Eunny on the other end. Crazy.
Anyway, I got several private messages from knitters who dislike triangular pieces, asking if there was a rectangular option. I’ve always intended to convert all my shawl patterns to scarves or wraps but . . . well . . . there are only so many hours in a day. Actually, they’ve all been charted out but I’ve never had the time to knit them up or write a proper pattern. In fact, I have a whole stack of graphs and plans for lace pieces that will probably never be knitted up because there’s just no time. Sad.
But, this time I got motivated to write up a scarf version of the Fountain Pen Shawl after finding the perfect yarn at my LYS. I charted out the lace pattern and started knitting. It’s almost done:
It’s a small, easy piece that is good take-along knitting. If anyone wants to test knit, let me know. I like to have all my patterns knit 2-3 times before I release them into the wild.
The knitting on the Fountain Pen scarf was briefly derailed by a Kusha Kusha scarf.
There’s more info on my Ravelry project page. I loved this project and it works up fast if you use the right needles. But I shrunk it a bit too much when I felted it. It’s several inches shorter than it was pre-felting. Since it’s just a little accent scarf so I’m not too disappointed. Plus, it’s just so damn clever.
Oh, and finally . . . here’s a shout out to the spammers who hacked my blog last week. Karma, bay-bee, karma.

Is that kusha done up in the steel yarn? how does it feel? I’m so intrigued by that yarn, but haven’t been anywhere where I can touch it. The fountain pen scarf looks great! I would love to be a test knitter, but I don’t think I would be able to finish it quickly enough for you… I am always getting derailed by so many things. If you don’t get any other offers, let me know, but I imagine that many folks will want to do this for you.
I somehow missed that Fountain Pen Shawl was your pattern. It is stunning, and immediately went on my short list for large shawls.
The Kusha Kusha is nice. I like the color change and I second the question about the steel. I’ve wondered about how it feels too. It looks beautiful though.
I’d be interested in test knitting the scarf version of your shawl. It’ll be good practice for doing the shawl itself.
oh I love it! what yarn did you use for the scarf? I would love to test knit. I’ve got 3 sweaters OTN, but won’t be able to wear them until it’s 40 degrees here in Texas! so plenty time to do some fulltime project for one of my favorite lace designers.
Love the color of the yarn & the scarf version looks nice. I like the pointy end. Will love to test knit if you don’t have enough test knitters.
It really shrank that much? Guess I wasn’t that tough on my Kusha. Can’t wait to see your scarf!
spammers? you too? sounds like a conspiracy.
Pretty! I’d love to test knit, if you’re still looking–I’ve even got some of that same yarn in my stash, waiting for the right project!
OMG, I love the Fountain Pen shawl in the new IK, but for some reason I didn’t make the connection between this blog and that pattern.
If you need any more test knitters, I’m always game.
I’d love to test knit for you if you still need someone. Lace=Love
Nice shawl & scarft pattern!
Enjoy your knitting.
Has a favorite 1 finger salute to spammers..oh wait..I’m too old for that..but how sad! Sorry you were hit but seems several of our good people were..so sad that some only have the power of the finger to anger and hurt so many others.
Love your Fountain Pen Shawl pattern in the Interweave Knits. I put it on my to do list. Hope you put it into a scarf Pattern next. I like do lace.
I was looking at my lace yarn stash and have a skein of blue yarn that would be perfect for a Fountain Pen shawl … that one is definitely on my list!
I love your new shawl pattern and look forward to seeing the scarf version all finished
Belated congrats on the Fountain Pen- I still don’t have my issue of IK in the mail. *sigh* Being somewhat lace challenged, the idea of a scarf version is sooo appealing.
Very pretty. I’d love to test knit also. Just learned how to read charts, so this could confirm both your chart and my new found knowledge.
You too? I escaped the latest hack but they got me last December. Bastards.
LOVE the scarf and you just may convince me to finish my Kusha!
I noticed immediately that the Fountain Pen Shawl was your pattern. I was just trying to decide which yarn to use for it as it is immediately going on the needles. If you ever need a test knitter for some of your backlogged patterns, I’d love to volunteer.
Great shawl and the Kusha Kusha turned out very well!!! LOVE the color!
So beautiful!!
The minute I saw your Fountain Pen Shawl I thought I would LOVE to have it in a wrap version! If you still need test knitters for this I’d love to help you out (or for any other projects you’ve charted). Congrats on the magazine spread!
Love the Fountain Pen Shawl. Got the mag yesterday and your shawl is gorgeous.
Agree on the wraps, and alas, agree on the time. Maybe a retirement project for all those charts? We knitters in the wild can only hope.
Wish spammers would shrivel up and die.
I would love to try your fountain pen scarf. The shawl looks so pretty. Plus the scarf would take alot less time for those of us learning lace weight knitting.
I use a fountain pen for all my non-net writing. I need a rectangular shawl to keep me warm while I’m writing. I knit – not quickly but I knit – and would love to help. If you have enough help, I really need to know when the pattern will be available!!!
Help!!!!! I’ve started the Fountain Pen Shawl over 4 times now and I’m getting off pattern when I start the pattern repeat. I’m a seasoned knitter and have more than 40 years experience in knitting but this pattern repeat is throwing me big time!
Does anyone have any tips, please? I love the piece and will NOT give up!
thanks!
Love the pattern! If you are still needing test knitters, count me in!
