Seeing Red

*Phew* the socks are finished and winging their way to their final destination. I can’t show them just yet, but the book will be published shortly.

As soon as the socks were off the needles, I started writing up a new lace design that was inspired by these little beauties who have come to live in my garden for the remainder of the summer:

Yum!

What do you think . . .

Nupps . . .

. . . or beads?

Decisions, decisions . . .

Right now I’m scrambling to get ready for a short vacation but I hope to have the pattern ready for purchase by next Wednesday.

Is it a scarf! I love scarves. ;-)

  2. Sarah R on 14 Jul 2008 at 5:23 am

Oh, how pretty. Both the photos and the knitting.

I like the nupps. Beads might be nice but I think perhaps they should be slightly larger than the ones you chose. They sort of get lost.

I agree with Sarah–the nupps look better in the swatches, so you’ll need to switch to bigger beads for beading to work.

  4. Cheryl S. on 14 Jul 2008 at 6:37 am

Of course the socks are finished and on their way! I never doubted it.

    I also agree with Sarah.

The tomatoes look like there waiting to jump into a salad! Love the lace pattern and the color.

  6. deb on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:03 am

Love the nupps or the beads! I’m just really feeling Monday-ish!

  7. Laurie on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:07 am

Nupps. Harder to do, but have more impact. Unless you use larger beads, as previously pointed out.

  8. Carole on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:08 am

    Nupps are a PITA.

  9. Sue J. on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:14 am

I vote for nups. I love the look, and so prefer them to beads. Thanks. Can’t wait for the pattern!

  10. Wanda on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:21 am

The nupps have a lovely organic look in your pattern.

  11. Stephanie on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:26 am

I’m with Sarah, beads, but bigger beads. More tomato-ish. Sigh. Aren’t tomatoes fresh from the garden one of the best things about summer? I can almost smell them from here.

  12. Heather Joins The Round on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:31 am

Bigger beads? Nups are way irritating.

  13. Marcia on 14 Jul 2008 at 7:36 am

    Beads.

  14. Ann-Marie MacKay on 14 Jul 2008 at 8:32 am

    OH that is beautiful.
    I totally love the nupps….

  15. thankfulgirl on 14 Jul 2008 at 8:32 am

beads would look better if they were larger.
if you can’t get them larger, then the nubs look better.

  16. Saralyn on 14 Jul 2008 at 8:51 am

    Bigger beads!

  17. Manise on 14 Jul 2008 at 9:19 am

Nice! Kind of like the nupps more, but if beads are used they should be round and a bit larger for full effect.

  18. iknitifelt on 14 Jul 2008 at 10:06 am

i vote for the beads! bigger of course….I don’t like making nupps, so my question… how do you put the beads on? with a crochet hook or do you string them? only concern… yarn breakage…

  19. Lynn on 14 Jul 2008 at 11:09 am

Nupps, definitely. Even though I am cursing them at the moment as I wend my slow way across the borders of Evelyn Clark’s Swallowtail Shawl, nupps are clearly the way to go.

  20. Betsy on 14 Jul 2008 at 12:38 pm

For your Sweet 100 ‘maters, both! Size 8 beads with the alpaca blend, I think; otherwise size 6 beads. How about a beaded edging using the slip-bead method, for those without tiny crochet hooks?

    Thanks for the eye candy.

  21. Jennifer on 14 Jul 2008 at 1:33 pm

    I’m liking the nupps!

  22. Jan on 14 Jul 2008 at 2:27 pm

    Nupps and tomatoes!

  23. Teresa C on 14 Jul 2008 at 2:59 pm

    I like the nupps.

  24. Kate/Massachusetts on 14 Jul 2008 at 3:39 pm

Definitely nupps! Over time and wear, beads will fade, scratch or break. They look pretty when new but an heirloom deserves higher quality than plastic beads! lol jmnsho

  25. Beth on 14 Jul 2008 at 4:01 pm

    Both!

  26. Amanda Cathleen on 14 Jul 2008 at 6:00 pm

I have to agree with Beth, both! I love them both!

  27. Erica on 14 Jul 2008 at 8:51 pm

I never thought I’d say it, but I like the nupps better than the beads. They show up a little bit better (though that might be partly due to the yarn color).

  28. Jane on 14 Jul 2008 at 9:31 pm

    Definitely nupps.

  29. Mary Lou on 15 Jul 2008 at 9:50 am

    wah – I can’t view the photos.

  30. inglesidebelle on 15 Jul 2008 at 8:12 pm

I’m with the nupps crowd. The beads just aren’t significant enough to fit the rest of the pattern.

  31. Beth S. on 16 Jul 2008 at 10:50 am

Nupps. Fiddly, but absolutely worth it. And I love how you’ve used them here–isolated instead of in the usual clusters. :-)

  32. Molly on 16 Jul 2008 at 9:44 pm

Nupps. For sure. They’re so much more organic than the beads… truly tomato inspired if you ask me.

  33. rebecca on 17 Jul 2008 at 2:13 pm

i’m going with the larger bead crowd – the nupps look great, too, though… it’s totally a personal preference – i think i would be more likely to knit this with the beads rather than the nupps. i have 3 skeins of the malibrigo lace (ice blue) — anxiously awaiting the pattern :D

  34. Katherine of it All on 28 Jul 2008 at 3:13 pm

    Oh, you’re the nuppiest.
