Meida’s Mittens — Sorta

I actually finished a pair of mittens! Shocking.

mittensFinished

Pattern: Meida’s Mittens by Nancy Bush from Folk Knitting in Estonia

Yarn: Brunswick Pomfret (loooooooong discontinued, sport-weight wool). Who remembers this yarn??

Needles: Addi Turbo 12″ circular, 3.5mm

Ravelry: Link to the Ravelry project page.

Mods: I made a lot of mods to the pattern. I used a heavier weight yarn so I cast on 24 fewer stitches. The pattern calls for 5 different colors but I only had 4 so I took some poetic license with the stranded color pattern. I also worked a sore thumb instead of an afterthought thumb and I changed the shaping at the top of the hand. I worked the decreases the same as for a wedge toe on a sock. I also added a two-color braid to the cast-on edge . . . worked in the opposite direction for each mitten, of course:

MittenCuffs

I noticed only 7 people on Ravelry have knit this mitten. I don’t know why. It was quick and easy since only the cuff has colorwork, and the mittens are beautiful.

Friday I’ll give a little review of Folk Knitting in Estonia as the next book in my review series.

Those rock. It’s the opposite-leaning braid that makes them. You’re the queen of attention to detail.

I love the mittens and LOVE Pomfret. Oh how I loved that wool.

I absolutely love them. But I want to make YOUR version, not the book’s version.

Great looking mittens! I don’t remember that yarn, but I have all sorts of OLD yarn in my stash that is probably from the same time period. I also love the old pattern books… mostly to laugh at the hideousness of the patterns, or the crazy sets for the models, and I enjoy that they have real teeth, not all perfect like you usually see in the models today. And, like you say, there’s often some gem in them!

Love those mittens! I think I would have made exactly the same mods too.

Beautiful mittens! I have an awful fondness for Pomfret…and quite a hoard of it in my stash, scavenged from ebay and thrift shops mostly, but also chunks of it seem to find me via friends who know that I collect it. I’ve knit a few project from it and plan to do a fair isle type sweater soon as well.

these are lovely …. I have them in my Ravelry queue, and have beautiful Norwegian yarn to knit them in, so I’ll come back to your posting about “heavier” yarns to consult with!

I remember that yarn! I’ll have to try those mittens, if you’re sure you’re not exaggerating how easy they are!

    Great job! Those mittens look spectacular. I’m not familiar with the wool though. :-;

Very nice! I have a ton of Pomfret I’ve collected off eBay over the years. I’m not sure why, as I live where it’s so hot that I really don’t need to be collecting wool, and I don’t have any specific plan for it. I just love the colors, the weight, the versatility, and even the labels. Once I had some, I just kept adding to it.

Thanks for giving me a clue as to what it could become.

So, wait – you’re saying that I could take those 5 colors of NatureSpun Sport languishing in my stash, and transform it into a pair of mittens I’ve liked since I got that book? *And* they’ll have fewer stitches and be quicker to knit? You’re a genius – I think there might be 8 projects on Ravelry soon. :)
