M is for . . . .
Merino and Mohair
I’m not much of a “joiner” and because I’m so picky about fibers and colors I’m even less likely to join something like a yarn or fiber club. That said, joining the Spunky Eclectic fiber club is one of the best things I’ve ever done. The subscription is month-to-month and a shipment arrives unless you cancel the previous month. Perfect for the disorganized part of my soul.
June’s offering arrived in my mailbox on Friday.
Hmmmmm . . . a mohair blend.
Now, mohair is not one of my favorite fibers but this roving was so soft and beautifully dyed that I couldn’t resist immediately tearing it into strips and predrafting it.
My plan was to spin it as a three-ply sock yarn. I figured the mohair would give the finished yarn some durability. I briefly thought about Navajo plying, but my piece had quite a bit of white in it and I didn’t want to end up with long white stripes in my yarn. So I decided to divide it into 3 equal piles and aim for a tweedy look.
By late Sunday morning I had my three bobbins finished.
By early Sunday afternoon, the yarn was plied:
Roving: Spunky Eclectic June club roving (70% merino / 30% mohair) Flowering Weeds colorway
Technique: short backward draw
Wheel: Spun on a Kromski Sonata; plied on a Schacht Matchless DT
Stats: 3 ounces; 3-ply; 241 yards
After it was plied, I let it rest for a day:
Then I gave it a quick, wet finish and set it out to dry.
It think it’ll make some nice socks.

Gorgeous.
I think your right! I just got mine in the mail today and now I’m all itching to start it…thanks
Look at the sheen the mohair gives it! Pretty. (Oh, and in the “resting” photo, the yarn is clearly not just resting; it’s meditating.
That is way cute. I hear really good things about Spunky Eclectic.
What? The socks are knit yet?? Heh heh. Lovely job spinning a lovely fiber.
I’m not a huge fan of mohair but this really is lovely.
Gorgeous!! Now you can ply!
It will make some great socks - very warm and hard-wearing I would wager. But not for you, eh? There’s blue in them thar yarn.
That is amazing yarn. I took a spinning class recently and have been dying to get a wheel, but I am in awe of your spinning skills, and your ability to use up fiber so quickly!
Wow. Just - wow!
That is really lovely. I dig the way you plied it.
I’m so glad you’re spinning! It must mean you’re feeling better.
This month’s club fiber is one of my very favorites so far. Which means I will probably take forever and a day to decide exactly how I want to use it.
Nice job! I can’t wait to see what the socks look like.
Wonderful yarn - I’m in awe of spinners!
Oh how Gorgeous!!
So pretty! I was part of the Spunky Eclectic club for several months, before I got such a backlog of fibers, I had to stop. It was a great way to try out different fibers!
You always spin such awesome yarn!
Love the skein of hair resting on your mannequin! Very nicely spun! I should have read your post before making my guess at Margene’s!
Very very nice! I agree it will make nice socks. Spunky always tempts…
Love the yarn! I think I might follow your lead. I’ve never done a true 3-ply (never had enough free bobbins before) and my Tour de Fleece challenge is to spin up as much Spunky Fiber as possible. So of course I have to do the most recent, silly!
The mohair makes it look really glossy. Pretty!
hey, I recognize that spoiler alert!
I bought a little bit of roving here in Oregon but I’ve got to get busy when I get home!
Very pretty! Really like the way the colors intermingled.
