F is for . . . .

Flashback

I was in Boulder, Colorado last week (did you miss me?). While strolling down Pearl Street, I happened upon a very large, very inviting candy store–Powell’s Sweet Shoppe.

Of course I went inside. It was stuffed to the brim with every kind of candy imaginable. Yum! And Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was playing on a TV in the back. Cute.

But one display in particular immediately caught my eye.

skybar

Holy old-fashioned candy, Batman, it’s a Skybar!

I haven’t seen one of these since I was a child (many, many years ago).

I can report, quite sadly, that it didn’t taste as good as I remember. But I nevertheless had a good time devouring it.

Who else remembers these? Come on, don’t be shy, raise your hand.

I remember those! When I was very young we would gather up all the loose change we could find in the house and sneak to “Gas and Goodies” to buy penny candy and a 25 cent sky bar.

I don’t remember those candies (I am too young) but a Powell’s just opened up in our downtown! I’ll have to check it out…

  3. marianne on 23 Mar 2008 at 9:55 am

I remember those! You can also get them through the Vermont Country Store (they have a website), they carry a few old school candies… Cherry Mash? and no, they don’t taste anywhere near as good as they did when I was a kid…

  4. Karen on 23 Mar 2008 at 10:17 am

Does anyone remember 7-up Bars??? They had 7 little compartments (or course!) with 7 different flavored fillings: caramel, orange, coconut, and I-can’t-remember the rest. Saturday afternoon while watching Creature Feature. Or am I imagining them?

  5. Chris on 23 Mar 2008 at 10:37 am

Yep, sky bars are in my memory banks. I remember specifically making sure I never got the flavors mixed, because I didn’t like the two middle flavors. Funny, isn’t it, that we all enjoy those flashbacks to when we were little (younger?). :)

  6. Batty on 23 Mar 2008 at 12:01 pm

I grew up in the wrong country for this. But it looks pretty yummy to me.

  7. Niki M. on 23 Mar 2008 at 1:15 pm

I remember those. YUM …Hey I’m having a silent auction in a quilt I just finished if you wanna come by and see it, or if you know anyone that likes quilts :) HUGS!

  8. Elizabeth on 23 Mar 2008 at 1:33 pm

Skybars are alive and well in Vermont.

  9. Norma on 23 Mar 2008 at 2:13 pm

Oh, I hate it when that happens. I have the same issues with candies from my youth, and other things, too — like Chef Boyardee spaghetti. Heh. I guess it was all pretty crappy then, too, but seemed great at the time.

  10. Amy Boogie on 23 Mar 2008 at 2:14 pm

Many places in Maine never stopped selling those. Hubby eats them all the time.

  11. Beth on 23 Mar 2008 at 2:15 pm

Must be before my time. I was always fond of candy dots on paper. Can I pick a stupid candy to equate with a happy childhood or what? :)

  12. margene on 23 Mar 2008 at 3:06 pm

They must not have made it West as I don’t remember them at all…looks like something I’d like, however. ;-)

  13. Carole on 23 Mar 2008 at 3:41 pm

Me, me, me! My dad worked for Necco when I was a kid so we had lots of Sky bars and Necco wafers all the time.

  14. Manise on 23 Mar 2008 at 4:32 pm

Not I. I was raised in Europe, but you’d think with our trek back to the States every three years that I’d have been exposed to one at one time or other.

  15. Cheryl S. on 23 Mar 2008 at 4:35 pm

I don’t remember the Sky Bars, but I do remember Necco wafers.

  16. Tygher Knits on 23 Mar 2008 at 5:50 pm

I remember them. And I remember trying them again in the last few years and realizing .. they weren’t as good as I recall either.

Oooh. But necco wafers … yum.

  17. Wanda on 23 Mar 2008 at 6:11 pm

I’ve never even heard of a Skybar. But you were in Boulder and didn’t tell me?!! ::pout, pout:: That’s ok, I’ll remember this! Did you get over to Shuttles to browse for more old Piecework and other mags?

  18. Bobbie on 23 Mar 2008 at 6:50 pm

“… it didn’t taste as good as I remember.” I remember them and was inordinately fond of them — and yet I recall them not tasting as good, even then, as I thought they should have.

For some reason, I thought I remember nougat being one of the four fillings….

  19. gale (she shoots sheep shots) on 23 Mar 2008 at 8:23 pm

oh yup, remember them! They were perfect if you couldn’t decide what candy you wanted. Like, that turkish taffy that you put in the fridge and then slammed into a million little pieces before you ate it.

  20. Alarming Female on 23 Mar 2008 at 9:49 pm

Nope, I don’t remember Sky Bars. Perhaps Margene is right and they weren’t out West. But I loved Sir bars—a slab of flat white nougat covered in chocolate. A mess to eat but one of my favorites from way back. Haven’t seen them in years.

  21. Debi on 24 Mar 2008 at 1:30 am

    Of course I remember them!

Doesn’t everything of our youth taste better, at least in our memories? :)

I got a serious shock last week when I had my first box of Girl Scout cookies in about 10 years or so….when did they get so tiny?

  22. angela on 24 Mar 2008 at 5:17 am

I have never heard of such thing. Of course, I am younger than Beth, so if she’s too young to remember them, then I must be too. ;)

My favorite was a “Marathon” bar. Yummmmmm.

  23. Carol on 24 Mar 2008 at 5:41 am

I don’t know what depraved part of the planet I was on, but I never saw one of those! Some childhood memories are best left there I guess ;-) Only some.

Though I remember them, I was more a fan of Mallow Cups. My dad used to bring Mallow Cups for us from work. (Now the thought of a Mallow Cup makes my teeth hurt!) My DH though buys a few Sky Bars every time he sees them, then puts them in the freezer. Those and Paydays were favorites.

  25. Ellen on 24 Mar 2008 at 8:57 am

I actually had one of those last week! My favorite is the peanut butter part. There are just a couple shops near here (upstate NY) that sell them.

  26. catie on 24 Mar 2008 at 9:04 am

I just went to the local Powell’s too. (It opened up last week in our town). I am a girl of the pop rocks generation, and found my personal favorite ZOTZ, along with Bottle Caps. I didn’t find any peaunut butter mountain bars, but the Motzart Kugeln were divine! (And as good as I remembered them.) As for the Skybar, I too am a western states girl, and they weren’t a part of my over-sugared experience.

  27. Lynda Hitt on 24 Mar 2008 at 11:36 am

I remember the skybars and the 7-up bars that someone else mentioned. The 7-up weren’t as good as the skybars, but I haven’t seen one in years.

  28. Carla on 25 Mar 2008 at 5:48 am

    (raising hand!) I remember them!
Just this past Halloween, my kids got “Zero” bars in their goodie bags! But I couldn’t remember which house on our block that it came from.. I was tempted to go back and ask them where they found MINIATURE Zero bars!

  29. Jeanne on 25 Mar 2008 at 9:04 am

Do I ever remember these. They used to be 5 cents and I remember having a quarter and buying 5 of them. I broke them all apart and proceeded to try and guess what the filling would be. I got soooo sick. I even remember the song.

    1 - 2 -3 - 4 skybar.
It’s the four in one bar.
Which flavor do you like best.
English toffee, yes that’s the one for me.
I like fudeg parfee my favorite of them all.
My favorite flavor is honey nugett.
It’s peanut whip for me, yes peanut whip for me.

I’m sorry I don’t remember the little characters that each said a line but the peanut whip line was said by a chahuahua.

Okay so maybe I don’t have enough to do but I do remember lots of old jingles. How about brusha, brusha, brusha…. for Ipana toothpaste?

  30. Melissa A. on 25 Mar 2008 at 4:49 pm

We have a store here in Halifax, NS that sells them. I’d never heard of them before, but I did try one once and thought it was quite tasty!

  31. lisa on 25 Mar 2008 at 5:17 pm

OMG I TOTALLY remember those! From, maybe 1973? (thinking 6th grade, walking home from the bus/school). Also Mallow bars and the odd cardboard ‘coins’ or whatever they were in there.

  32. Laurie on 25 Mar 2008 at 5:34 pm

Yes, I remember them, and can’t even recall when they disappeared from common commerce. I wonder why.

  33. Beth S. on 26 Mar 2008 at 1:27 pm

Necco wafers, sure… those were a childhood favorite! But I cannot recall the Skybar. Oh well. ;-)

  34. Lee on 26 Mar 2008 at 4:00 pm

I remember them, but was never fond of them!

  35. Kim on 29 Mar 2008 at 7:10 am

I can honestly say I don’t remember Skybars. We were busy munching down Idaho Spuds and Bit-o-Honey bars.

  36. Birdsong on 29 Mar 2008 at 3:40 pm

Isn’t it sad when that nostalgic feeling doesn’t extend to the taste? You have probably just become too accustomed to gourmet dark chocolates, LOL.

  37. J on 06 Apr 2008 at 11:21 am

I remember Skybars and I can still find them here in the Northeast.

  38. kitkatknit on 06 Apr 2008 at 10:18 pm

Never heard of a Skybar but I must confess to buying and entire box of Walnettos from the candy store by my Grandmother’s house in New Jersey to bring back to Denver. This was back in the Laugh-In days.
