C is for . . . .

Cursed Cotton:

IMG_4153

When Laurie gave me 5 skeins of Cotton Fleece two years ago (or was it three?), I immediately set out to find the perfect pattern. I eventually settled on a cardigan from the June 2006 issue of Creative Knitting.

Although the only photo that still exists of this sweater shows only the back, I knit the entire sweater, less about 4 inches on the second sleeve, before I frogged it. I just stopped feeling the love for the garter ridges and the modified drop shoulders. The yarn went back into the stash until last year when I cast on for the Laurent sweater from Rowan Vintage Knits.

No photos exist of that attempt although I can report that Cotton Fleece stands up really well to repeated frogging.

I recently decided to have another go at knitting up the cursed cotton yarn:

Will the third time be the charm?

Your guess is as good as mine.

OOOO I LOVE the cable on the top. It looks so pretty. I hope you stick it out. I think this will look really nice.

So far, so good! I had no idea you tried something between the M-man sweater and this one.

    Hi–

I’m a regular reader but seldom-seen commenter, and I just wanted to tell you to hang in there, because your result will be worth it. One of my favorite sweaters was knit from Cotton Fleece at least ten years ago, and it still looks great. Be glad you’ve insisted on the perfect pattern–because you’ll be wearing it a long time!

    This project looks great!

I made my “Too Long Basalt” from Cotton Fleece and loved knitting with CF. You keep going back to it, so you must not dislike the yarn – right?

  5. Cheryl S. on 13 Feb 2008 at 1:22 pm

It certainly looks like a winner! Great cable detail.

  6. Debbie on 13 Feb 2008 at 1:32 pm

Hmmm, and after our SnB conversation last night re our new fave Ravelry group, I thought “C” was for something else…

  7. Trish on 13 Feb 2008 at 1:34 pm

Looks perfect, but, if it doesn’t work out, you may want to give Rusted Root a try – looks great in Cotton Fleece. Can’t wait to see it finished!

  8. Jennifer on 13 Feb 2008 at 2:30 pm

I think third time will be the charm! The cable looks great in that yarn.

  9. Jennifer H on 13 Feb 2008 at 2:54 pm

Is that the Gathered Pullover from Interweave KNits Winter ’07? Yours is waaaaay prettier than mine so far. I may have to frog the variegated yarn I’m using and make it into a cardigan.

The C is for Cursed Cotton Charm. I love it so far.

Did you get the photos I sent? Are you stunned into silence? ;)

  11. Beth on 13 Feb 2008 at 3:07 pm

What a great yarn for that one! I’m going to stick to my planned turquoise. If I ever get around to it…

  12. lisa on 13 Feb 2008 at 3:11 pm

So was it the pattern or the yarn that you weren’t loving?

  13. TheAmpuT on 13 Feb 2008 at 3:35 pm

*sigh* Well, JUST last night I ordered several skeins of this yarn to make a little summer top (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/juliet-2). I figured if I had leftovers, I would make the “Saturday Market Bag” by Jodie, via MagKnits.
I have only knit with cotton once. It was recycled, and I couldn’t stand working with it. I am hoping I enjoy this more, since this is a blend with wool in it, but now you have me nervous! LOL
Goodluck, and yes…third time is often the charm!

  14. Kathy on 13 Feb 2008 at 3:45 pm

It’s looking great! I’m a frogger too — better than ending up with a garmet you don’t like/wear.

  15. Anne on 13 Feb 2008 at 4:01 pm

Oh yeah – definitely third time. Forge ahead. All looks good. :)

  16. Nancy on 13 Feb 2008 at 6:08 pm

    This 3rd try is lovely!

  17. rositta on 13 Feb 2008 at 6:44 pm

I have some cotton yarn that I have frogged three times now. Although it’s not the same yarn you have someday I will find the right pattern for it. Your sweater looks like it will be lovely…ciao

  18. --Deb on 13 Feb 2008 at 8:43 pm

I did manage to complete my Green Gables in that yarn but agree with you about cotton being cursed. We just don’t get along unless it’s thoroughly blended with something else–preferably wool!

Good luck, though, because that sweater is looking great.

  19. Wanda on 13 Feb 2008 at 9:44 pm

Dang, you’ve really gone rounds with this yarn. At least the pattern is looking good the third go round. Hopefully you’ll like this one more.

  20. Corrie on 13 Feb 2008 at 9:50 pm

Ok, I *really* like that fabulous cable – I hope it works out! It really looks like it will be a lovely knit.

  21. Alarming Female on 13 Feb 2008 at 10:45 pm

okay, I don’t even remember owning that yarn. That’s why my stash continues to grow.

I love what you’ve done with it!

  22. Rachel on 14 Feb 2008 at 12:40 am

It looks like we have a winner! Isn’t it fun reflecting on the life stories of yarn? I feel as if some of my skeins must be having an identity crisis by now…

  23. Carol on 14 Feb 2008 at 5:33 am

3rd Time’s always the charm! That pattern will great in that color!

  24. Becky on 14 Feb 2008 at 5:55 am

I love the knotwork cabling! Beautiful!

  25. Alice on 14 Feb 2008 at 10:52 am

I love the cables, and yes…third time will be a charm. I’ll be waiting to see the finished sweater.

Do you mind if I add you to my favorites on my blog? I took a sock class from you (long-a-go) at the Wool Cabin. I found your blog again and would like to add to mying.

  26. Beth S. on 14 Feb 2008 at 11:32 am

It had better be, after all that effort. ;-)

Seriously though, the new pullover looks fantastic! Really good definition on that cable.

  27. maryse on 14 Feb 2008 at 12:05 pm

your third go looks great so far. and i do love that color.

  28. Shannon on 14 Feb 2008 at 1:01 pm

I’m wearing the gathered pullover as I type this. My new favorite, it’s red for Valentine’s :) Happy knitting!

  29. Ellen on 14 Feb 2008 at 8:00 pm

Ohhh, I love it! It looks like it will turn out great!

  30. Octopus Knits on 14 Feb 2008 at 9:01 pm

I certainly hope the third time’s the charm – it’s looking lovely!

  31. sil on 14 Feb 2008 at 9:08 pm

Oooh, so cute! I do like that sweater and cotton fleece is a very good match for the pattern. I hope you finish it so I can copy…

  32. elizabeth on 15 Feb 2008 at 7:09 am

Ooohh! I love Cotton Fleece yarn and I love the cables. Third time is a charm.

  33. Laurie on 15 Feb 2008 at 3:14 pm

I do like that diving into the depths of the skein photo. And perhaps the stitch definition in the cables will seduce you onwards to a FO.

  34. Batty on 16 Feb 2008 at 6:08 pm

Looks good so far, let us know how it fits. I have some Cotton Fleece and really like that sweater. Oh, the possibilities!

  35. marjorie on 17 Feb 2008 at 2:49 pm

I have similar feelings about cotton, and I had similar problems with Cotton Fleece. A basically stockinette sweater was a stretchy disaster. I reknit it in a cable pattern, and the cables give it shape. This is, however, a UFO because I didn’t modify the sleeves correctly in adapting the pattern (they’re too wide). It is a simple fix, and I hope to do it this summer when it is too hot to touch wool. I’d definitely use Cotton Fleece again, but only with all-over cables. Your WIP is looking very good.

  36. Jennifer on 18 Feb 2008 at 6:05 am

It looks good so far. I hope this one makes it to the finish line.

  37. Patricia on 18 Feb 2008 at 4:37 pm

Love the yarn and the color. The experience reminds me of my DB Cotton Silk Aran voyage. Also very tough. Looking great, as per usual!
