The Wheel And The Mill

Sadly, the knitting has recently taken a back seat to barbeques, yard-work, hiking, and attempts to beat the 100-degree heat. I did, however, finish Navajo plying the singles I was working on last week.

For some reason, I had a difficult time keep a good tension as I was plying. I suspect it was because the singles were a bit overspun and, thus, kept kinking up. I wanted some tightly-spun yarn suitable for socks but I might have gone a little overboard. I ended up plying with the Schacht and using my Sonata as an extremely expensive Lazy Kate. Basically, I put the bobbin on the Sonata’s flyer and kept the brake on to keep tension on the singles as I plied. Not my best work, but not the worst either.

I also spent a little time playing with a skein of Brown Sheep’s new yarn, Serendipity Tweed. I stopped into my LYS on Friday and the owner gave me her sample skein to try out.

I’m reallying like the yarn and the knitted fabric. It’s 60% cotton and 40% wool; not blended, though, but plied together. See for yourself . . . . .

Unlike some cotton blends, it’s very soft, albeit a little splitty. All-in-all, though, it’s a very nice addition to the Brown Sheep line.

The colors of that new BS yarn looks really appealing. But not as nice as your newly plied yarn though.

Your spinning is so nice! My yarn is overspun and hard…yours looks marvelous. The new yarn from BS sounds marvelous, too!

I think that’s beyond beautiful yarn you’ve spun, love the colours!
The new BS yarn is very interesting, I kind of like the way it looks, I’m looking forward to hearing more of what you think.

The blue/green yarn looks fairly even to my eye. I have a question about the navajo plying. Do you get little bumps where you’ve pulled your new loop through, or does it stay smooth? I’ve been thinking about trying it sometime.

It looks pretty nice to me! The Brown Sheep is intriguing, too.

Your 3-ply looks lovely! It will make great socks and knitting up takes care of so many tension issues.

Your yarn doesn’t look overspun from the picture. It looks even.

That’s really neat. I need to whip up a baby present in two weeks, I’ll have to check out the Serendipity.

Your handspun looks great! I can’t even see the bumps!

I have learned that Navajo plying is a whole different animal than your garden-variety 2-ply. ;-) But I think yours looks great, even if it did give you lots of trouble.

Thanks for the closeup shot of Serendipity and the description. I’ve enjoyed knitting with Cotton Fleece, and it seems as if this yarn might have more memory because of the separate plies. I’ll have to try it out.

I’m not a spinner, but your yarns look lovely to me.

Wow … your handspun is terrific. I’ve just recently reaquainted myself with my wheel and feel like a beginner all over again. I will have to try the navajo plying. This look interesting and a great way to use those spools of singles. Thanks for the inspiration!

The new Brown Sheep looks very promising… though I love the colors of your sock yarn. I am enjoying Navajo plying and its lovely rhythm, though still making some pretty wonky yarns. I can see now why you are so fond of this method!

I can’t believe how even your spinning and plying are! That blue and green yarn looks commercially done, it’s so nice. Maybe someday I’ll be that good! I’m going to give you a shout out on my new podcast, PassioKnits. It’ll be in Episode 2, which I’ll do this week. You can find it at www.passioknits.blogspot.com
