The Heel
Are you still with me? I know Beth and Kathleen are.
Is anyone else actually knitting along instead of waiting ’til the end??
Today I’m posting the instructions for both the heel flap and turning the heel.
Flap:
K9, place the next 20 sts onto a piece of waste yarn (these are the instep sts), turn.
Row 1: sl 1, p19, turn.
Row 2: sl 1, k19, turn.
Repeat Rows 1-2, 9 times (18 total heel flap rows).
Turn the Heel:
Row 1: sl 1, p12, p2tog, turn.
Row 2: sl 1, k6, ssk, turn.
Row 3: sl 1, p6, p2tog, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-3 until all heel sts are used up. The right side of the sock is facing you and 8 heel sts remain.
When you’re done, your SIP should look like this:
That should keep you busy for part of the weekend. Next week, we’ll tackle the gussets, foot, and toe and I’ll share my fool-proof method for Kitchenering, complete with photos of the Kitchener Maven.
Bloglines Update: It appears my feed is now updating on Bloglines . . . well, at least for now. Yay!

I just got excited for you that Bloglines has finally caught on and picked up your feed!
I’m knitting along, too. I’ve never knit a sock in a worsted weight before — moves along fast enough that I can keep up with you and not knowing how it all turns out is kind of fun.
(I’ve never used Bloglines so I never missed anything when you moved!)
Oh yes, I’m knitting along with you. I really wasn’t exptecting to get the heel instructions tonight but now that they are here guess I’ll start the heel flap. I’m loving the pattern so far.
I am knitting along. I wish my ssk looked as neat as yours.
Wow! That was a fast heel.
I am knitting along in Cascade Superwash, a lovely purple color. I started yesterday and have both socks done up to today’s addition.
I flew from Tucson to New Orleans today and airport/airplane time made for some great progress!
Thanks so much for the pattern and tutorial.
Kath
me too, i’m knitting along. good fun.
I’m planning to catch up this weekend!
I’m knitting it too. Slowly but surely.
It’s a lot easier on the hand than sock yarn.
I’m here – knitting along in Wisconsin where it is 2 degrees this morning.
I’m knitting along too! Looks like Bloglines is working.
I also am on board. These socks will probably go to CIC – (Big kid’s challenge). I am making them in Denim blue, Patons Classic Merino. Fun to knit along – thanks so much
Ohh… good, the heel and Grey’s Anatomy tonight! I wish I had two sets of size 5 DPNs so I could do the second sock at the same time. Perhaps a stop at a yarn store is in order tomorrow.
Oh man – after seeing Kathleen’s I *really* wanna switch yarns. It might involve a quick trip to the LYS though…
I’m knitting along now. I am staying home with my son who has strep throat today. I did bring work home, but I didn’t say exactly when I would get it done. With this many “free” hours, why not knit myself a pretty sock?
thank you for sharing – I will never get over the generosity of those who give us patterns on the Internet!
need to ask a dumb question.
I am working on 2 circs — I have 40 stitches.
If I knit 9, place 20 on a holder (or one of my needles) then I have 21 stitches to work the heel flap with — not 20 — what did I do wrong??
Kath
Sorry — duh! I have my 20 stitches to work my heel on — hotel sleep is just not real sleep!
Kath
I’m here, but not knitting along (too few hands, not enough time)
I most definitely intend to knit the sock, but I have two pair on needles right now, so I have to wait. And, Bloglines finally started updating.
I’m knitting along too, but I got hit with some sort of stomach bug last night, so I don’t know how far along I’ll get for a couple of days.
I think this is a lovely project, although I found it late. If I didnt already have several things on the needles, I would totally have knit with you
Knitting along too..here in Va..brrr…hope to get the heel done today, missed the installment until late last night..Much thanks Susan..I love the intrigue of ‘what’s next’..
I am waiting until the end (trying to finish up old projects before starting new ones), but I want this to be the next sock project I cast on. Loving this pattern and looking forward to the kitchener maven.
hey susan, i’m doing fingering weight, making adjustments as i go…didn’t have any worsted that was superwash. i am taking your pattern to the gym and riding a recombinant (sp?) bike while listening to an audio book and knitting your sock. My new way to pretend like i’m not exercising.
I’m knitting TWO of them at a time, one in a purple variegated wool, and one in a nice pale gray so I can see the stitches. I’m complusive.
I just started knitting along….It took me 2 days to decide what stash yarn to use. I’m using a beautiful cranberry wool – got to go knit so I can catch up!
I’m knitting along too! I’m not quite through with the leg but I love the way it looks and it’s so fun the same thing with some other folks.
I can’t knit along as I have a “rule” for myself to only have one pair of socks in progress at a time… though maybe a fast pair of worsteds could be considered an exception. I will definitely be doing this pattern.
ok, my friend. go to my blog spot and lo and behold.
actually i had to dig up and extra dpn cuz i’m working on the booties and the sox at the same time. i believe i’ll put this sock bit on holder and make the other one up to this point…yanno?
Started a 2nd pair today..using Plymouth Encore..have posted 1st one..with heel..
I too am knitting along and having a great time!!!!! What pattern are we doing after the socks are done? I love this!!!
I’m also knitting along and anticipating the next segment. These socks will go to CIC but I like the pattern so much that I would like them in fingering wt. yarn to fit me.(LOL) Any chance of an adult size pattern using fingering wt. yarn?
I purchase the Forest Canopy Shawl pattern months ago. I tried it twice, frogged each try, and haven’t gone back to it yet. I will, I will. However, I see this sock you’re working on, and although I have several things on the needles at the moment I would love to try a pair. Will you be posting the pattern in one post upon completion or should I start printing it out now?! It’s so pretty.
I’m knitting along with you for CIC–started this morning and am about halfway through the leg. Great pattern. Thanks for posting.

*pant pant* Okay, I’m all caught up! C’mon, let’s have the foot!!
I started sock.1 yesterday on 1 circular needle using magic loop; ready to do heel flap. The “knit 9, place 20 on waste yarn, turn” is a little confusing – I’ll try turning back over the 9 and see what happens. If this is wrong would you please email me?
Thanks – this is my first attempt at a knitalong and I’m enjoyiong it – even though I started a couple of days late.
I am knitting along with you and trying to catch up to 2 socks at the same point by tonight. It sure goes much faster with worsted weight!!! The heel area seems long – probably since I am an American heeless (birkenstock-wearer)! Hope to wear these in Park City next weekend! We are delighted to be traveling to where it’s warmer!!!

I AM knitting along, albeit slowly. Also, W. LOOOOVES the old wristwarmers. He wears them to school everyday, and all the other kids are jealous at recess.
Nice banner!
Oh it was like a good book that I didn’t have the next chapter for. Now I have it! I’ll knit This next part, then post on my blog.
Me again – When you left us for the weekend, I finished sock.1 as far as the heel, and started sock.2. Now I’m ready to turn the heel on sock.2. Next I hope to load them both on the same circular needle and finish them both together. Wish me luck – I know it can be done, just hasn’t yet been done by me!
I want to thank you and congratulate you for the clarity of your instructions – sincerely.
Hi Hi , I am following your sock, I got as far as turning the heel, Thursday February 8th , 2007…..
but now I cannot find your blog anymore for the rest of the instructions, which I might add I understood perfectly……..
I just wished I would understand the shortrow heel I see all over the place.
