Spring Things Shawl

Update: Lauren just wrote and told me she’s started a knitalong for the Spring Things Shawl. Click here to join.

My new shawl design is now available! You can purchase the pattern by clicking on this link. Or you can purchase it on this page, too. Just scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see the PayPal button. I’ll be away from my computer for a few days after Wednesday. So if you have any trouble downloading the pattern, it may take me as long as a week to respond. Sorry about that.

  • This small shawl is knit from the center back of the neck down to the bottom edge. The upper body is worked first, followed by the upper border, the lower border, and then the bottom edge.
  • CloseBestGreen

  • This project is suitable for an adventurous beginner or intermediate knitter. It is knit entirely from charts which show both the right and wrong side rows. To complete the shawl you will need only one skein of Karabella Lace Mohair or one, 2-ounce ball of Jagger Spun Zephyr. So it’s a great one-skein wonder.
  • The Upper Border uses a stitch pattern that combines stockinette stitch, reverse stockinette stitch, and nupps. Nupps resemble flat bobbles and are worked by increasing into a stitch on the right-side and then purling 5 stitches together on the wrong side. You can chose to eliminate the nupps altogether or substitute beads in place of the nupps. The different effects are show below (click on the photos to enlarge them).
  • The green shawl with the nupps was knit from Karabella Lace Mohair.
  • The blue shawl was knit from Zephyr Wool-Silk and the nupps were replaced by beads which were placed using the crochet hook method. The bead are size 8/0 and were purchased from Earth Faire.
  • The size of the finished shawl measures approximately 60 inches across the wingspan and 30 inches down the center back. The pattern includes instructions on how to make the shawl larger.
The cost of the pattern is $6.50 and all payments must be made through PayPal. To purchase the pattern, simply click on the link below:
Once you have completed the payment process, you will automatically receive an email containing instructions on how to download the pattern. These instructions will be sent to the primary email address tied to your PayPal account so please check that email account. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the file. WOW! YEAH! I’ve said it before… I love your patterns. If it weren’t for your forest canopy, I’d never be knitting lace.

Thanks for another wonderful design… now to find the perfect yarn!

  2. Sarah on 02 Apr 2007 at 6:08 pm

Oooh! That’s beautiful! I am right in the middle of the Forest Canopy Shawl right now, but I know once that is done, this is the next one on my list!

  3. Birdsong on 02 Apr 2007 at 6:20 pm

Now, this is totally beautiful, and looks like a pattern I could be pretty intuitive about! I will have to buy it when at home to download. Do I have enough of my gift Crystal Palace Kid Mohair? I have two balls and could see this shawl in that color (I would do the nupps, they are so cool!). Great job, again! Like I said, when do you sleep?!

  4. Lauren on 02 Apr 2007 at 6:26 pm

Yay! I just bought it :) I even have the Zephyr and the beads for it - it’s beautiful!

  5. Brenda on 02 Apr 2007 at 6:52 pm

It’s gorgeous! And your timing couldn’t be more perfect either, as I JUST finished my second Forest Canopy Shawl (pics on my blog).
Off to buy the new pattern now.

  6. Faith on 02 Apr 2007 at 6:58 pm

ooh this is lovely! I like that it has two different lace patterns but doesn’t seem overly fussy or brain-bendingly complicated, Nice work!

  7. Kat on 02 Apr 2007 at 6:59 pm

Gorgeous! I’ve submitted payment, just waiting for the download. Thanks for another fabulous pattern.

Fabulous! So excited to knit another one of your beautifully-written patterns.

  18. Kate on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:09 am

Beautiful, and the pattern is already downloaded. Now to find the perfect yarn.

  19. Betsy on 03 Apr 2007 at 2:58 am

I think you could probably go up to a 6/0 bead so it would stand out more, or a contrast 8/0 like a silver-lined. Ellen has some real beauties at http://www.earthfaire.com Maybe those cube beads … oh the possibilities…

  20. Carole on 03 Apr 2007 at 3:45 am

It’s fabulous, Susan. You are a designing wonder. I could kill you for the nupps but they do look terrific.

  21. Frarochvia on 03 Apr 2007 at 4:00 am

How terribly tempting! I love the mohair version… hmmmmmm.

  22. Judy on 03 Apr 2007 at 4:30 am

What a wonderful pattern. I can’t wait to see all the beautiful versions that will be sprouting up all through the spring in Blogland. Guess I’ll just have to think of those nupps like mosquitoes, slap ‘em and get on with it.

  23. Wendy on 03 Apr 2007 at 4:41 am

    WOW!!

  24. Susan on 03 Apr 2007 at 4:55 am

Oh, that’s beautiful. I have to say that it reminds me a bit of a peacock’s feathers, only prettier.

  25. Frieda on 03 Apr 2007 at 5:50 am

I’ve been waiting anxiously to see this new pattern up on your blog . I’d previously knitted the forest canopy shawl - loved it ! I’ve already purchased this and have the perfect yarn in my stash . Keep on designing!

  26. Gwen on 03 Apr 2007 at 5:52 am

Damn! I wish I would wear a triangular shawl. I’m tempted to knit it anyway and just FRAME it. But my version would not be suitable for framing, I fear. Looking forward to a rectangular version.

  27. Anne on 03 Apr 2007 at 6:21 am

GORGEOUS! (As usual - you do such lovely work). I like it in all the colorways I’ve seen it knit up in. Very very nice and perfect for spring.

  28. David on 03 Apr 2007 at 8:31 am

Are you bringing the finished shawl to SnB?

  29. Kara on 03 Apr 2007 at 9:15 am

Ooh, so pretty! You are a genius.

  30. Charity on 03 Apr 2007 at 9:27 am

    Your shawl is fabulous!

  32. Heather on 03 Apr 2007 at 11:23 am

    Gorgeous! Love the green.

  33. Pat on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:24 pm

Oh - I wasn’t going to knit another triangular shawl for awhile….but this is so tempting!
    It is gorgeous, Susan!

  34. Stacey on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:37 pm

Susan, this shawl is positively stunning. I’ve decided to knit it in Jade Zephyr, with beads. The nupps are lovely, but I just can’t resist the sparkle of a bead!

  35. Alarming Female on 03 Apr 2007 at 4:46 pm

It’s so nice to knit your patterns knowing that if things aren’t working out, it’s definitely MY fault, not yours, and likely a misreading.

Knitting patterns should be designed by anal retentive obsessive-compulsive detail-oriented types, don’t you think?

    *giggle*

Can I use html in comments? I guess we’ll see.

  36. Alarming Female on 03 Apr 2007 at 4:49 pm

Well, some of it worked, but not the “strikethrough” command. Oops. For the record, all was crossed out but the innocuous “detail-oriented” jab.

    Sorry, luv. You rock!

  37. heather on 03 Apr 2007 at 5:03 pm

Oh my god that is beautiful!!!! I just may have to buy this one next…that is after I finish my first lace project ever……ILOVE IT!!!!

  38. Kelly on 03 Apr 2007 at 5:17 pm

Wow, that’s beautiful, and just the kind of lace project I’ve been looking for. I’ll be buying soon!

  39. Monika on 03 Apr 2007 at 8:43 pm
