No Room At The Inn
A short trip to Sun Valley, Idaho has been part of our summer for the last 18 years. The annual convention of the Utah State Bar Association is held there in July and even in the years we’ve forgone attending the meetings, we’ve nevertheless made the trip.
The kids adore Sun Valley since the resort is completely self-contained and they’ve been permitted to wander the grounds without constant adult oversight since they were quite young. In fact, I think the candy store in Sun Valley was the site of their first completely unsupervised retail experience.
Since we’re creatures of habit, we stay in the place–the Sun Valley Inn–and for years we even stayed in the same room. This year, as usual, we made our reservations months and months and months ago. So, you can imagine our surprise when we arrived around 5:30, attempted to check in, and were told there were no rooms at the Inn. Disaster!
The clerk, however, apologetically offered up replacement lodgings.
Welcome to our vacation cottage:
There’s a living room, dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms, two baths, and a fabulous patio area with a bitchin’ gas grill.
I brought three of the four knitting projects I blogged about the other day. Only the Mystery Stole didn’t make the cut. Surprisingly, though, I’ve done very little knitting. As soon as I sit outside on the patio, someone I know walks past and stops to visit.
Last night there was such a nice little crowd outside that a couple wandered up, opened the French doors, and started to walk into the cottage. When I asked they if I could help them, they sheepishly confessed they thought the gathering was an open house/reception.

Sounds like you made out! I was afraid you were going to say that you were turned away. Glad you’re having a good time.
I think I’d want to try for that cottage instead of just rooms next year.
What a SWEET ‘little’ lodging you scored! It’s beautiful! and love the flowers and trees and and and!
Have a great time!
Aren’t you the lucky one!! Sweet!
Poor baby! Sort of like us not getting in to the PC Marriott last time out and having to stay in a suite at Deer Valley. It’s just an outrage! Glad you are having a good time…looks beautiful!
Looks like a great place!!!
Can I live there, please
I think that I just may need to take the Utah bar.
Sun Vally
My old stomping grounds, that may become my new stomping grounds. My brother in law is opening up a grocery store next to the country club/golf course. We may be moving back to run it.
I never was in Sun Valley in the summer….. we have friends that own condos there and would go up during the winter.
I had my first legal drink there
Oh, how lovely! Sometimes things just come together so nicely.
I know just where you are! Wow. I always wondered what the inside of that cottage looked like and who was lucky enough to stay there. Have fun. It looks fantastic. I wish I were there–maybe next summer.
That’s gorgeous!
I think that I would be moving in on a permanent basis. What great accommodation. You’ll be spoiled now!
Grrl, that is one sweet place. I want to move in!
Good customer service. Isn’t it great when you run into some? Instead of seriously damaging your relationship with the Inn, they just made sure that you’ll love them forever . . . ;o)
Man, why can’t more businesses get a clue?
Gorgeous photos . . . how fun to stay in a beautiful place like that.

What a lovely cottage! It’s so warm and inviting, the perfect place to sit and knit.
How fun! It’s like Beatrix Potter meets the 21st century.
What a fabulous place! How does one rent this place?
You got comped really well! Saweet!
I like those kind of changes…a house is great on vacation, especially with children. ENJOY!!
Sun Valley is heavenly this time of year. I grew up in Jerome - you probably passed right by if you drove up from Utah - just a little veer off Highway 93. We spent many a summer hanging out at the Big Wood River campground (just a little west of Ketchum) and would always make sure to get a pizza at Louie’s (I think they’re gone now - a shame - they made a mean pizza-pie.) and do a little ice skating at the SV Lodge.
You probably know this, yet I’ll throw it out anyway - there’s a sweet little yarn / needlepoint shop across the block from Giacobbi Square - Isabelle’s, I think.
Your digs are GREAT! Seems like a great way to experience SV!
Wow, I am so jealous! I passed through that area once and it was so beautiful!
My parents are SV regulars too–they go 2+ times per year and ski or hike, depending on the season! I learned to ski there 30-something years ago, too. We’ve looked into staying in that cottage!
I’m sure you know about this, but if not, be sure to check out Isabel’s Needlepoint (and yarn) shop in Ketchum!
So lovely! I can almost feel myself relaxing in one of those rooms, or outside in the flowers. =)

Who is Isabel? Your new Koigu is beautiful. Here is a photo of mine http://indianhillmediaworks.typepad.com/yarntalk/ but I want MORE and there are only a couple of places in Philly that sell it! I am looking for a turquoise mix that isn’t too bright. Your vacation cottage looks like a fabulous place to knit!
