More Than Enough

The Horcrux Socks are done:

And there was plenty of yarn left over:

In fact, 6 grams is a ridiculously huge amount. The two completed socks only weighed 58 grams so that’s almost 10% of the yarn left over. Laritza wasn’t quite as fortunate. She ran out but still managed to complete the pair she was knitting. That’s ingenuity.

In addition to the socks, I also finished the project I started from the One Skein Wonders book:

Cute, huh. It’s the Lotus Purse pattern on pages 49-50 in the book. And, I just realized it’s also one of the free patterns posted on the One Skein Wonders website.

The pattern calls for a skein of Noro Lotus yarn. I used a strand of Lion Brand Trellis held with a strand of Lion Brand Incredible ribbon yarn. Nasty stuff, but they were perfect for this project. And, it looks like I’ll be able to get a second purse from the leftovers.

But first, I cast on for a new sock:

The yarn is Southwest Trading Company’s new sock yarn — Tofutsies.

I’m loving the yarn so far. Despite the fact that it’s 50% wool, it doesn’t have much elasticity but it’s smooth as silk (without the nasty pilling of silk) and it glides so nicely along the needles. Does anyone know how it wears? And does the Chitin smell when the yarn gets wet???

I just bought some Tofutsies today. No idea how it wears but the shop had a sample sock - it felt … durable.

I am glad you made it. Yes! 6 grams is a LOT of yarn compared to my 24 inches……you know a knitters dozen = 11

I bought the yarn from Webs and so far I am HATING it. I have gotten past the splitting and with Knit picks needles, that’s easy. But I was having a terrible time with the yarn bunching up as I worked the yarn. I finally had to cut the yarn and pull it forward( does this make sense?) so that the bunching would go away. After re-attaching the yarn that problem was solved. I have now gone on to other socks in the meantime. One day I might go back and continue on the sock. MAYBE!!!! At least the yarn was on sale at Web’s……cg

Well, I’ve seen posts on blogs and message boards about Tofutsies, but none yet about the potential smell issue. Now I’m also curious about that. And, though I wasn’t knitting along, I must put Horcrux on my to-knit list. What a great way to use extra worsted weight yarn left over from a larger project. (Plus, potentially, have socks that match your sweater!)

I’ve started a sock three times (with Tofutsie’s). I’ve put away my Tofutsie yarn, for another time. I liked the feel of the knitted fabric, but knitting with it was not so much fun.

Ewww. Feet can be smelly enough on their own without the possibility of a seafoody addition….

I started a sock using the SWTC in Jan..it’s still sitting at the heel stage..I had problems from onset with the yarn splitting..wasn’t a fun knit..but very pretty and it’s on my agenda to pick back up soon and complete..but it’s not as fun as Horcrux with worsted..

So I want to know who is going to add “Yarn” to the industrial uses section of the WikiPedia article on Chitin . . . . ;o)

Very cute purse! I am glad that your sock worked out and that the scale is coming in so handy:)

The purse has that home-made loom quality to it. Remember those square looms that you would weave the circular bands to create potholders? That kind of quality.

Thank-you for the worsted wt. sock pattern. Also curious about the blue dpns on the sock. What brand are they? Haven’t seen them before.

will you be posting the new horcrux pattern in sock weight to your sidebar? I love the new scale. I bought a one at staples and I love it!

I’ve walked 10 miles on a hike in my Tofutsie socks and my feet didn’t smell one bit. Now, if feet are going to smell, that would definitely be the time!

It was very challenging to knit with because it kept splitting. That was annoying. The end result is lovely, though. Definitely wouldn’t recommend bamboo dpn’s, though.
