Lucky
I have the enormous fortune to belong to an amazing Stitch ‘n Bitch group. As I’m sure you deduced from my Saturday post, our only male member died unexpectedly last week. It was difficult news to comprehend but made many of us take stock of how lucky we are to have our little bit of heaven every Tuesday night.
This past Tuesday, there was a birthday celebration for me, Heather, and Eileen. While we talked a lot about David, the mood remained festive and it was nice to share memories of him. There were treats, including an awesome Root Beer cake baked by Blog-Free Val, still-warm brownies from Jessamyn, and Gwen’s coconut meringue cookies. And, there were non-food presents, too:
Clockwise, starting at the top left . . .
- A fantastic orange (of course) lily from Gwen. She also gave me the Burt’s Bees hand creams and the cute tin of Atomic Fireball candies.
- Gorgeous red-orange (of course) Coopworth/alpaca roving from Margene
- In front of the roving is a cone of Habu silk that Miriam picked up for me in New York
- Next to the roving is an adorable, clever hand-sewn bag from Anne that contained the OnLine sock yarn positioned in front of it
- Blessed Juno soap, an organic cotton washcloth, and a skein of Opal sock yarn in a dreamy dark teal color from the soap queen herself
- Two balls of the new Kaffe Fassett Regia sock yarn from Heather in a wonderful blue color
- A ball of tweedy blue Trekking sock yarn (for which I have “a Plan”) from Cheryl
- A hank of orange (of course) Ball and Skein sock yarn from Margene
- A bar of Green & Black’s dark chocolate from Eileen (head over to Eileen’s blog and leave her some good wishes)
- And a totally out-of-the-blue, surprise gift from Beth (who mailed the package to Margene with instructions to deliver it to me at the party) consisting of some candy and a hand-knit and felted Hedgehog
Here are some better views of all the loveliness:
Thanks, everyone, for making the day special!

Hey, I just surfed over here to cut and paste your URL into my latest blog entry and discovered that it looks as if I totally copied your post! Mine’s structured exactly the same way, right down to mentioning who brought the food! It took me all day to get my entry together, so I went ahead and posted it anyway, but I feel like such a DORK! Oh, well. There are only so many ways to tell a story, right?
The fun fur hedgie makes me laugh every time.
Lucky group!
Beautiful gifts. Enjoy them all!
Now that is a LOT of presents! Congratulations!
The hedgehog is the cutest thing ever.
What a haul! Happy Birthday, again. Have you named the hedgehog yet?
I’m lovin’ that Regia…my colors, for sure.
You know, I haven’t had the courage to join an SNB group around here (there aren’t many, maybe 1 or 2), but it’s great that you have a supportive group of friends like that! I’m quite shy, so maybe one day I’ll have the courage to join, or maybe start my own!
Quite the haul! Love that hedgehog, he is too cute!
What a LOVELY picnic packed lot of goodies! and I agree, that hedgehog is the very cutest!
Beautiful gifts! What a lovely way to spend your birthday………with friends! Happy Happy!
I’m sure your plan for that Trekking is elaborate and fantabulous - but I was just looking through my handknit socks last night and the softest ones are all the Trekking pairs. I’d never have guessed it!
Indeed we need to appreciate the treasure that is our friends. Even in FL I found friends that without them, there would be no Monday night to look forward to. So nice you had a great time on your day and seems you’re pretty well loved
Soooo? What’s hedgie’s name?
Happy Birthday again…I did send you wishes the day before to beat the crowd! You are so lucky to have that group, you just don’t know! Love the hedgehog.
I’ve got a little something for you, too. I should be at SnB next week.
Love the rusty red-orange roving from Margene (her taste in gifts is impeccable, isn’t it?) And I am curious to see what you do with Judy’s sock yarn, as I have a nearly identical skein waiting for just the right project to come along.
I’m so glad it was such a great day!
I am right now knitting sock with that very color of Kaffe Fassett Regia sock yarn and I am totally enjoying it!
Let me add my belated Birthday wishes to those you’ve already received. I wish you a peaceful and prosperous year with many more to come!
Lovely gifts. I just sent a hedgehog that I named Hettie to a new big sister! It was fun to knit and I did the same as your friend and embroidered the eyes and nose. I worry about removable eyes with three year old children! Of course, at your age, I guess the removable ones would be okay!! You are a lucky girl with lovely friends!
I love the hedgehog. Where did she get the pattern for that?
What fun, wonderful gifts!! Happy belated birthday!!
We are lucky, aren’t we?
(patting myself on the back)
That hedgehog is hilarious. I’m glad I got to see it in person. Thanks for taking me along.
Happy Belated Birthday, Susan! It looks like it was great - I’m glad!
Wow, all that knitty stuff!
Happy birthday, I hope you had a great time! I’m still recovering from all the cheesecake I ate on Tuesday for mine. Yum, cheesecake.
Just back from vacation and catching up. Happy belated birthday, Susan!!! I’m curious to see what the plan is for the Trekking. And I love that skein of Judy’s yarn.
Thanks for the compliment on the wrap. I would imagine that the August 2007 issue of Knit ‘n’ Style is still available, buy you are welcome to borrow mine either way.
I love the hedgie, and of course you deserve all of this specialness….
Happy birthday! It is a wonderful thing to be so loved.
Happy Birthday! Great prezzies, great friends.
