Fiber A-Weigh
Thanks for all the helpful links to small, kitchen scales. I ended up buying this Tanita model from a local kitchen store mostly because I’m all about buying local.
It seems to work great. So great, in fact, that I’ve already become somewhat preoccupied with weighing all kinds of little things around the house; mostly for no good reason.
I did, however, use the new scale to help with a little reorganizing of the fiber stash this weekend. It’s helped me realize the fiber stash is expanding at a frightening pace. The organizing was precipitated by the receipt of a rather large box of goodies from Amy and a realization that another box is on the way. To make room for the new acquisitions, I spun up a few morsels.
The first was a batt I recently bought from an Etsy seller. I used this fiber to practice my long draw, a technique I pretty much suck at. Although the finished yarn lacks uniformity, I like how nice and fluffy it is.
Trouble is, I don’t particularly like the color.
Not to worry. I broke out the dye pot and overdyed with a bit of blue.
Much better.
I also dug out some fantastic Shetland roving that I got off the Housecleaning Pages last year. I can’t believe I forgot about this fiber since it’s the very type I most love to spin. Nicely carded and soft, but still a bit “rustic.”
If you’re looking to add to your fiber stash, check out Anne’s new Etsy store. Very tempting!

Are you sure that’s blue? Looks a tad purplish on my monitor.
Be sure to show all of the goodies from Amy!
I did the same thing when I got my scale - weighed random things to see how they compared to the weight listed on the package
Big boxes coming from Amy? Lucky you. And dude, I’ve already bought (and received) fiber from Anne.

You only bought one scale, right? I knew it:-(
YOU like the yarn overdyed in blue? The spun yarn looks fabulous!
i like both colors ,but i would have choosen the not overdyed with blue.
also, i wanted to tell you that i got ONE Horcrux sock from one skein of 110 yard skein of woool of the andes. using size six needles. yay me; altho here in florida we won’t have too many more days for red wool socks; hehehe
After we got married, my husband weighed his shiny new wedding ring on the mass balance in the lab. Weighing things is FUN!
Have fun with your new toy!
What Margene said - Blue? You? Of course, I love the color. Blue/purple = all good.
And thanks for the link to moi!
I can just picture you going around your house, thinking “I wonder how much this weighs… why, I could use my nifty new scale to find out!” Have fun:)
Very Nice Blog!
Regards,
Mae.
Definitely an improvement on the color, although I didn’t mind the first iteration.
I love my scale. I quantify all kinds of things, and collect useless information. I have all my bobbins marked with their weight. Just in case.
