Because I Felt Like It

I bet you thought I forgot to show you what I made from the yarn I knit up on the Ultimate Sweater Machine and dyed purple. Have no fear. My computer time has mainly been spent adjusting to a new laptop and the new Windows Vista operating system (which just totally saved my arse when I let the battery get too low *phew*). In any event, here are the particulars.

After dyeing the yarn as I described in this post, I unraveled it and wound it into a center pull ball:

Gradated Yarn

Then I set about finding an appropriate pattern.

My first choice was the Marsupial Bag from the first Stitch ‘N Bitch book.
Abandoned Marsupial

(I’m not sure why the color is so off in this photo — the yarn is purple, not blue.)

It’s a great design, but after I was quite a bit into the bag, I remembered all the reasons why I dislike knitting it. Those left twist stitches are a pain to work and I don’t like the line of loose ladders between them. So it was frogged.

Then I started a Sophie bag, but abandoned it before the base was completed.

Abandoned Sophie

For some reason, I was just not feeling the Sophie love.

In the end, I just made up the design as I went along.

After felting, I finished it off with a 70s-era daisy pin.

Gradated Felted Bag

I have a little more than half the yarn left so I’m thinking of making a second little bag that moves from light to dark instead of dark to light.

Very pretty, Susan. You seem to have the touch when it comes to felting. I’d have never thought that the proportions would have come out so very nicely. (Then again, I’m just not an intentional felter yet. ;o)

Oh, and most all digital cameras have a red filter built in, the workings of which have yet to be revealed to most of us commonfolk. So, when you get an occasional photo of something purple that’s blue, now you know why. It’s the inconsistent and uppity red filter sticking its nose where it’s not wanted.

I’ve been wondering lately what would happen if I took yarn already wound into a cake on a ball winder and dipped it in a vat of dye for a brief period of time and then followed the usual steps for dying. Would it come out somewhat graduated or spotty. Might have to try it.

Wahhh! Everyone else can see the pictures! I click on the empty boxes and get “this photo is private”

I bet it does look nice. I was considering getting a machine to do just that and I realized I REALLY don’t need another obsession. :)

Love the color of the yarn and the gradation…and the bag is CUTE as can be!

Are you going to offer the pattern for the bag for the design-challenged like me?

Hmmm, you’ll have to help me come up with a pattern for the bag I want to make but can’t find a pattern for! Love that technique, by the way, with the machine knitting…..am seriously thinking of buying one! Yeah, I need another toy…..

Yay!! Lovely!! Seeing as how I am not only a purple lover but a daisy lover too, better not let me near it in person, it just may go home with me!

It’s so interesting that I’ve been meaning to do a very similar thing, only a la Norah Roberts, ie painting, for a stranded project.
But I too am sitting on a friend’s knitting machine. It’s quite a trick to eat up so much yarn so quick.

Your bag looks very cool. If you think of it and don’t mind sharing, could you give us some ideas of how you made this.

  27. Kim on 22 May 2007 at 5:32 am

    Very nice Susan!!!
