Back To The Blocking Board

Well, my Rhinebeck Not-Sweater is officially off the needles.

I just need to find time to block it before I leave early next week. And it’s raining so it may take longer than usual to dry.

Moving on to a completely different subject . . .

Does anyone know anything about Occidental College? Did you go there or do you possibly work there? My son just went on an overnight campus visit and I’m interested in the 411.

I know two “kids,” now in their 30s, who went there quite happily and I’ve only heard good things about it even earlier. Wish I could be more specific.

Don’t tell me you ran out of yarn after all. :) I like the edging - will it stay ruffly or no?

Oooh — I can’t wait to see it in person!

LOVE the shawl…it’s very pretty and just what I imagined from your description.

Is your son interested in Occidental College in Eagle Rock? My sister went there many years ago. It is still a fantastic but very small college. My sister and I went to high school at nearby Arcadia High, which had over 2600 students way back when, even as a three-year high school. My sister found Oxy very intellectually challenging and terrific preparation for Duke Med School (where she met her husband). Her own hesitation about recommending it now is that she wished she had gone to a larger college. Fortunately for my sister, many of her friends from Arcadia High went to USC, which provided my sister the social life she liked.

Perhaps a once over with the hair dryer to give it a jump-start.

My former assistant graduated from Occidental two years ago. She was great - strong character, integrity, etc. She really loved it there - the school’s values seemed very compatible with hers. I was sorry when she graduated because that meant she had to move on to a “career” job. Like Gina (previous commenter) said - it is a small school. Could be a pro, could be a con…

    Love your Rhinebeck project!

No comments on the college, b/c I’ve never been and don’t know anyone, sorry! I think your son might like it and it’s not in the middle of nowhere, so that might be helpful for him.

Yay for finishing the shawl! Now justto get it blocked. It looks beautiful.

i don’t really know anything about occidental college, but i can tell you about eagle rock, and it’s lovely. it’s very much an up-and-coming area with some fabulous cafes and the best cupcakes in LA County!

The not-sweater is lovely! I knew it would be in time:) College? Sorry, I’m too far east to even consider it. Girl 1 is sticking to So FL for at least a couple of years.

Oh how lovely! WHat a talented woman you are! I still love the lily of the valley smoke ring! One of the most beautiful lace works I have done yet!

Lovely not-sweater! I hope to see you (and it) at Rhinebeck. (I’m a Sunday square.)

My sister went to Occidental College back in the 80s. She loved it, especially the international exchange program. The small, close-knit school community suited her socially; when she wanted to stretch academically, the resources of UCLA were nearby. It was a good fit for her.

I have a friend whose daughter just started there this fall and she loves it. The parents went over and checked it out and said it is a nice small college (approx. 1500 students) and that they really look out for their students. Hope this helps.

Gorgeous shawl and congrats on finishing it in time!

My niece is a Freshman at Occidental and loves it! Small but exciting, challenging etc. A great community. Close to the advantages of LA but small town. Scholarships available - my niece is a water polo player and got some financial help because of that and her academics. Has a great reputation for Liberal Arts.

My SIL went to Occidental and loved the small school environment. Advisors are very involved in your education. She says it’s definitely not for everyone, but if you’re looking toward a small school, it’s great.
